Hospital Tour
We’re into Week 35. Mary’s perfectly round belly has started to morph into whatever shape BoomBoom wants to make. The other day, we were watching tv and looked down to see one side of Mary’s belly pushed out making her appear extremely off balance. At the risk of upsetting BoomBoom’s future grandparents, the scene in Alien really does come to mind when you see Mary’s belly move around like it does.
Yesterday was another one of the steps to reality that I’ve mentioned before. We took a tour of the Ohio State Hospital Maternity ward where Mary will be giving birth. We saw the triage room where the doctors will make the determination to admit Mary or send her home and wait until she’s “really” ready. We saw the room where Mary will be while she’s in labor. They are absolutely beautiful! Hardwood floors, tv, CD player, disco ball (ok, no disco balls). In a fashion befitting OSU, 90% of the delivery rooms have views of Ohio Stadium.
We toured with about five other couples. One of the guys only asked one question during the entire tour, “Is there a refrigerator for drinks?” Is he planning to bring in a six-pack of longnecks to wait out the screaming and pushing? The highlight was a tour of the recovery floor where mom and baby recover and get to know one another. There are great big single occupancy rooms, a fold-out couch for Dad, and private baths. The tourguide took us to the nursery where we saw all the newborns. Mary’s observation, and it was right on, is that they look like a bunch of burritos. All swaddled up with just their pink heads sticking out, the nursery looked like the order line at Chipotle.
Man, what an affect newborns have on us old, jaded, cynical adults. Looking down the line of the other couples, each of the dads, including me, was grinning ear-to-ear as we looked at a preview of what would soon be our very own baby. Is it possible to do anything but smile when you see a little baby all wrapped up like that? Pretty cool.
