I "snowflake" Lutsen

Mary, Louis, and I returned from a long weekend in Lutsen, Minnesota last night. We had a “durn goode time”. We met up with some of Mary’s Peace Corps friends and their respective spouses. DSCF3021 There were 13 of us in total including Lou, and his new friends Nayana and Shakti. Our hosts, Konnie and Mukhiya Gurung, live in St. Paul. (Here is a nice article about Konnie during her time in Peace Corps Nepal.) DSCF3023 We all packed into one of Lutsen’s Sea Villas where we spent the weekend fishing, playing poker, sitting around the campfire and sharing an occasional drink. DSCF3006

Louis had a ball. One of my favorite Lou moments was during a group hike around the top of one of Lutsen’s mountains. The fall foliage was gorgeous with lemon-lime leaves mixing with red and orange - it looked like a Technicolor dream world. Louis started the hike asleep so I turned him to face me in his little pouch carrier. DSCF3031 He woke up half way through the hike and was perfectly content to look over my shoulder at the colors and rest his head almost purring into my chest. I was a very proud Papa. I thought of how important it will be to get off my lazy couch potato rear and make a concerted effort to spend time with Louis outside. DSCF3026

My other favorite Louis story was at the very end of our trip last night. We had spent 5 hours driving from Lutsen to St. Paul, another two hours waiting in the airport and a final two hours flying from St. Paul/Minneapolis to Columbus. Louis was pretty squirmy on the plane and we could tell he was tired of traveling. We just had one more leg of the trip before we could put him in bed - the shuttle from the airport to the parking lot where our car waited. Louis sat on my lap looking out at the other 10:00 p.m. passengers on the shuttle. Wide eyed and observant as usual he quietly took in his surroundings. We had just left the main terminal when Louis started giggling uncontrollably. No one was making googly faces at him, no one was tickling his feet he was just giggling. Soon the giggling turned into a full-on 6 month old belly laugh. Every one on the shuttle started laughing with Louis. We remarked that he was like a punch drunk fighter, too tired to cry and simply amazed that he was putting up with yet another form of transportation that day. I still don’t know what started the giggling in his ever expanding mind but it absolutely put the perfect end to a wonderful weekend.
